BELLA is a freelance playwright and scholar focusing on Science Fiction theatre. Her plays have been developed at the Great Plains Theater Festival, The Barrow Group, New Perspectives Theater, The Science Fiction Theater Company, Otherworld Theatre, Lookingglass Theater (NYC), the Pittsburgh New Play Festival, The Antaeus Company, and Road Less Traveled Productions. Her play The Aurora Project was produced at the Science Fiction Theater Company and Otherworld Theatre in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Other recent honors include the 8th Annual New Works Festival at Panndora Productions where Medusa Undone was developed, as well as finalist status for both the Woodward/Newman Drama Award and the Samuel French OOB Festival. Her play Speed of Light was recently produced at both Quantum Dragon Theatre Company and Road Less Traveled Productions. Speed of Light was also an honorable mention on the 2015 Kilroys list.
In addition to her playwriting, Bella also a research scholar, working on a PhD in Performance Studies at the University at Buffalo . Her ongoing research project explores representations of robots, cyborgs and AI on stage, starting with their first appearance in Karel Capek's 1921 classic, R.U.R. Other research interests include mixed reality performance, hauntology, and female playwrights. Bella holds a BFA in Acting from Boston University, and an MFA in Playwriting from the Iowa Playwrights' Workshop.
